Outdoor Games
Now that LazyTown has given kids that get up and go... It's time to get up and go!
Tag (and Variations)
Everyone loves tag, and it's a great way to get kids moving. For more interest, try some of these variations.
- Freeze Tag - When a player is tagged by 'it', they "freeze" and can't move again until another player tags them.
- Backwards Tag - Tag, but everyone must run backwards.
- Water Tag - 'It' gets a water gun and uses it to tag the other players.
- Dinosaur Tag - All players must move like a dinosaur (or another favorite animal).
- "Category" Tag - 'It' gets to name a category such as: colors, animals, etc. To avoid being tagged, a player can get 10 seconds of immunity by sitting and naming an item (non-repeat) from the category.
Races
If you've got really little ones or a mismatched age group, have them try to beat their best time rather than the other players.
- Potato Sack - You will need large bags and soft grass because players will trip and fall.
- Ball/Potato on a Spoon - Encourage players to go slower to keep the ball on the spoon.
- Sponge Race - You will need two buckets. Players rush to carry water from one bucket to another via a large sponge. First player (or team) to fill the second bucket to a certain level wins.
- Over/Under - A variation of the sponge race, players line up front to back. The first person passes the sponge over their head, the second between their legs, third over their head, etc. Can also be played with a balloon or ball for cooler weather.
- Leg Lock - Players place a balloon between their knees and keep it there all the way to the finish line.
- Animal Races - Players must move like whatever animal the referee calls out. (Favorites include: penguin, frog, dinosaur, crab). For a relay race, have each successive player be another animal.
- Red Light, Green Light - "Red Light, Green Light, One, Two, Three." Players race for the finish line, but can only move while the phrase is being said.
- Balloon Pop - Players must pop a series of balloons, placed about five feet apart. In hot weather, use water balloons.
Classics
Try some of these classic activities.
- Hide and Go Seek - Make sure all players know where the boundries are and areas they MAY NOT hide.
- Leap Frog - Kids love this one. It makes a good race too.
- Follow the Leader - Make sure everyone has a chance to lead.
- Simon Says - Excersize and practice listing and following directions. What's not to like?
- Obstacle Course - Make an obstacle course out of objects in the backyard. You can also include items such as "do 5 jumping jacks".
Sports Variations
- Crab Soccer - The rules are like regular soccer, but use a large beachball and everyone must crawl like a crab.
- H.O.R.S.E. - Players must score a basket from five different positions on the court. Younger players may need a lighter ball.
- Lucky Ball - Place several fully and partially inflated basketballs at the 3 point line. Players must grab a ball and attempt to dribble it and shoot a basket.
- Marshmallow Golf - Players use a golf club to hit a marshmallow as far as they can.
- Scrambled Eggs - Played like reverse dogeball (use soft, lightweight balls). Players have two minutes to get as many balls on the other team's side. Works best when the balls are thrown away from the opposite team's players.
